The next top on the cruise was to Pisa and the ever so famous leaning Tower. We went on a short strip to Miracle square, which
is surrounded by an old wall and is home to five historical landmarks. The
landmarks include the baptistery, the cathedral and of course the famous bell
tower known as the leaning tower of Pisa.
Currently after many attempts at
correcting the tower, it leans at the same angle that it did 300 years ago when
Galileo was discovering gravity by dropping coins off the top.
We did not have time to go into any of the other 4 buildings
but we did climb the tower all the way to the top. There are seven bells at the
top and walking around the tower at an angle is a weird feelings. We climbed
the 293 marble steps to the top and the view was awesome.
After the tower climb, we returned to the port and ended up
wandering around the Port city of Livorno, which was destroyed in WWII. You can
still see some of the buildings that were damaged but it was mostly been
rebuilt since then. There are two fortresses in the city that we went and
wandered around but other than that, it was somewhat blah. Livorno had made an
attempt to replicate the city of Venice with some canals and it just was not
the same.
